Enhanced Cleanliness Procedures - the Clean Thumb Club™

Your health and safety is our #1 priority, and we're committed to keeping our clubs clean and safe. As a leader in the fitness industry, we’ve always had extremely high cleanliness and sanitization standards in place. Our employees conduct regular and thorough cleaning of all equipment, surfaces, and areas of the club and regularly complete deep cleanings. Although we cannot eliminate all risks associated with COVID-19, we've taken several additional steps to strengthen our existing cleanliness policies and procedures to help keep you and our employees safe when your club reopens.

Below are some of the changes you can expect when your club reopens:

  • Employees will receive daily temperature checks and wear a mask during their shift
  • Effective August 1, 2020 - Masks are required in all Planet Fitness locations, except while actively working out, and in accordance with local restrictions
  • All employees will have completed extensive training related to our enhanced cleanliness and sanitization policies and procedures
  • Increased, thorough cleaning will be conducted using disinfectant on the EPA list effective against COVID-19. This includes 20-minute walk arounds by our employees to continually clean and sanitize high-touch areas
  • Increased sanitization stations will be available throughout the gym floor for member use – look for the yellow flags!
  • Touchless check-in is available via the free Planet Fitness app featuring COVID-19 wellness questions. Simply download the app in advance and scan in at the front desk. In addition to a touch-less check-in experience, our app also puts the gym in your pocket with over 500 workouts at your fingertips.
  • Crowd Meter, a new feature on Planet Fitness’ mobile app, allows members to check club capacity before coming into the gym
  • Some pieces of cardio equipment will be temporarily marked out of use to enable Social Fitnessing™ and create additional distance between members
  • New signage will be placed throughout the club that highlights our sanitization and Social Fitnessing™ guidelines
  • PE@PF may be temporarily modified based on local guidelines and restrictions. You can sign up for a session on the Planet Fitness app. Check your local club for more details.
  • Additional information about operating hours or other local guidelines that may apply can be found on your club page.

Finally, be sure to also checkout this VIDEO on how we are keeping our members and employees healthy and safe.

Our employees will be conducting increased, thorough cleanings throughout all areas of the club using disinfectant on the EPA list effective against COVID-19.

Yes, we do! You will find increased sanitization stations throughout the gym, fully stocked with disinfected spray and hand sanitizer. We want to keep our PF community strong and healthy!

Yes. To encourage and enable Social Fitnessing™, some pieces of equipment will be temporarily marked out of use to create additional distance between members.

Check out your local club page on our Club Finder to find out if your club has reopened and if your club has a change in hours or capacity limitations.

Here’s how you can be “Cleansiderate” and do your part to help keep our Planet community healthy:

  • The CDC recommends you wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water before using equipment
  • Remember to disinfect equipment before and after use
  • Maintain physical distance between members and employees
  • Please stay home if you're not feeling well. Don’t worry, we’ll be here for you when you feel better!

We couldn’t do it without our awesome PF employees, and their health and safety is our priority. We are providing all employees with PPE such as masks and gloves. They have conducted extensive training on our enhanced cleanliness and sanitization policies and procedures upon returning to work. Additionally, all employees will have their temperatures taken when they arrive for work each day.

We know you love working out with your PF trainer! To enable physical distancing and keep our employees and members safe, PE@PF may be temporarily modified based on local guidelines and restrictions. You can sign up for a session on the Planet Fitness app. Check your local club for more details.

Out of an abundance of caution, we have temporarily suspended our Pizza Monday and Bagel Tuesday events. Our top priority is your health and safety, and temporarily suspending these events helps us to maintain appropriate physical distance between members and employees, and lessen the amount of touch points between people, food and other surfaces. We will continue to evaluate the situation as it evolves and will be sure to keep you up to date with any future changes to our offerings.

Planet Fitness' Mask Policy

Your health and safety is our #1 priority, and we're committed to keeping our clubs clean and safe. For the enhanced safety of our members, guests and employees, masks are now required except while actively working out, and in accordance with local restrictions, in all Planet Fitness locations worldwide, effective August 1, 2020. This means that a mask must be worn at all times, and in accordance with local restrictions, in the club (except while actively working out) including when entering and exiting the facility, in between machines and exercises on the gym floor, cleaning, and while in the locker room and NOT behind a private enclosure such as a shower or tanning room. While you are actively working out, you do not need to have a mask on.

Wearing a mask in public is proven to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, and as a leader in the fitness industry, and your long-term partner in health and wellness, we are committed to doing everything in our power to ensure the health and safety of our Planet Fitness community. Thank you in advance for your support and adherence to this policy. This added safety precaution also helps us to remain open to serve you and keep you healthy and active.

Members and guests are required to wear a mask except while actively working out and in accordance with local restrictions. This includes upon entering and exiting the facility, and while in the facility except while actively working out, and in accordance with local restrictions, or behind a private enclosure (shower, changing room, tanning room, etc.) or drinking.

No, members and guests are NOT required to wear a mask while actively working out but must follow all local restrictions. But remember, members and guests must have a mask unless they are actively working out (and in accordance with all local restrictions) such as when individuals are entering and exiting the facility, cleaning equipment, and while walking on the gym floor between exercises.

Effective August 1, masks will be required at all times except while actively working out, and in accordance with local restrictions. If you have a medical exception that prohibits you from wearing a mask, or you prefer not to wear one, please reach out to your local club.

All Planet Fitness locations have disposable masks available if a member or guest forgets their mask. We’d be happy to provide one to you!

Stricter local requirements will be enforced above and beyond our mask policy.

Yes, employees are required to wear a mask at all times during their shift for their safety, and the safety of others. This policy has been in effect since we began reopening our stores on May 1

We know that wearing a mask while working out may be new for some of our members. Here are a few tips from our awesome PF trainer Teddy Savage! You can also check out a video from him HERE.

Teddy’s tips:

  • Choose a mask that works for you. Don’t get caught up in the “one size fits all” thought process when choosing your mask.
  • Breathe to the beat of your own drum. Hum a little tune in your head to control your cadence of breath.
  • Infuse active rest in lieu of strict cardio. It may be slightly more challenging to do steady state cardio. So instead, do a few seconds of active rest when exercising. For example, if you’re on the treadmill jogging on an incline, decrease the incline or slow to a fast walk to catch your breath. Then, you can speed back up again.
  • Plan for breaks into your routine. Tactfully place breaks into your routine as you are getting used to working out with a mask.
  • Use shorter time intervals for your work to rest ratio. Instead of doing one 60 second time interval, break it up into two 30 second or three 20 second intervals.

Wear your Mask Correctly

  • Wash your hands before putting it on
  • Put it over your nose and mouth and secure it under your chin
  • Try to fit it snugly against the sides of your face
  • Make sure you can breathe easily

Club Reopening Plans

The majority of Planet Fitness clubs have reopened, and we are working closely with our franchisees and adhering to local guidelines. If your club has not reopened yet, you’ll be the first to know when the reopening date has been set! You can also check your local club page on our Club Finder or your club’s Facebook page for updates.

We encourage you to download the Planet Fitness mobile app to allow for a touchless check-in process. We are also asking that all of our members Be Cleansiderate™ at our clubs and disinfect equipment before and after use. Additionally, you should plan to practice Social Fitnessing™ by putting an imaginary treadmill or two between yourself and others to adhere to physical distancing guidelines.

We have provided personal protective equipment (PPE) to our employees including masks which will be required for staff to wear, and gloves to use for extensive cleaning. Effective August 1, members and guests are required to wear a mask except while actively working out and in accordance with local restrictions. (more information on our mask policy can be found in the FAQs below). Together with our franchisees, we will continue to follow the recommendations of local authorities at each of our clubs in order to take every necessary precaution to ensure the safety of our community.

Check your club page on our Club Finder or your club’s Facebook page for updates on local requirements. As always, please stay home if you’re not feeling well. Don’t worry, we will be here for you when you feel better!

To date the majority of our clubs have reopened, with more to come as local restrictions are lifted. At Planet Fitness, the safety of our team and members is our top priority. We have taken a number of steps to protect the health and well-being of our employees and members, which include enhanced cleanliness and sanitization policies and procedures, physical distancing measures, reducing physical touch points in the club, and more. Now more than ever it's important to stay active, in order to stay healthy, and we look forward to safely and responsibly welcoming you back!

Membership Questions

Yes, for clubs that have not reopened, your membership remains frozen. You will not be charged any fees while your club is closed. We will keep you informed and let you know when your club is ready to reopen, and look forward to serving you in a clean, sanitary, and judgement free environment. Can’t wait to see you back in the club soon!

If you have any questions about your membership in the meantime, visit our Contact Us Page and we would be happy to assist you.

Don't worry, while your club is closed, we've got your back! Your membership will be frozen and you will not be charged any fees while your club is closed. We will make an adjustment on your next billing cycle when your club reopens for any unused days for which you have previously paid.

If you have a prepaid membership, the expiration date of your membership will be adjusted by the number of closed days. For example, if we are closed 30 days and your membership was set to end on or about November 30, that membership will be extended to on or about December 30.

If your annual fee date was going to change given the club closures in March, all members with an email on file were notified in advance of this billing date change upon your club reopening.

The annual fee is a one-time fee, per your membership agreement. Unlike monthly membership dues, it is not based on the billing days or amount of days open and is a maintenance fee to provide our awesome members with a Judgement Free fitness experience.
