A Judgement Free-kind Of Love: Planet Fitness Offers Valentine’s Day Tips For Working Out Together

NEWINGTON, N.H. (February 8, 2017) – Planet Fitness, Inc. (NYSE:PLNT), one of the largest and fastest-growing franchisors and operators of fitness centers in the U.S., understands that hitting the gym might not seem like the romantic gesture one might expect this Valentine’s Day, but partnering up – either with a friend or a loved one – can actually add a little va-va-voom to your fitness routine any day of the year.

Known for its Judgement Free Zone®, Planet Fitness has compiled a few tips to help you feel comfortable while working out with your partner on February 14 and beyond. According to a study published in the American Journal of Health Behavior, working out with a partner increases the intensity of an exercise session and helps you keep going for longer periods of time – when compared with exercising alone,

Zehetner, co-author of the book Working Out Sucks (And Why It Doesn’t Have To), offers up a few simple tips for working out together.

  1. Simplicity Wins: If you want to work out with your partner, you don’t have to develop some complicated training program that can be done in pairs (though this could be fun too). Just keep it simple. Go to the gym, hop on treadmills that are right next to each other, and go for a little stroll. You’ll both be able to go at your own pace and still get in some good conversation. And if you prefer something other than the treadmill, well, that works, too.
  2. Partner-friendly 30-minute Express Circuit: Planet Fitness’ 30-minute circuit is tailor-made for workout partners. There are 20 total stations – 10 strength and 10 cardio – located just off the main floor of any club. This area is ideal for those that may see the free weight area as a bit more intimidating and would prefer a more private setting to work out in. While one individual is doing one of the strength machines (and cheering on his or her partner), the other individual can use the step station to get in the cardio component. Plus, since you’ll be done in just 30 minutes, you’ll still have plenty of time to continue the conversation at a nice lunch or dinner after your workouts.
  3. Compromise: If you and your partner don’t happen to be at the same fitness level, it’s important to make sure that the exercises can be done by both people. Make it fun and be sure to include a strength component, a cardio component, and a pre- and post-workout stretch.

  4. Warm Up/Cool Down: Even if you go to the gym together and each have your favorite machines you like to use independently, try parking 10 blocks or so away and ‘warming up’ and ‘cooling down’ together by walking to and from the gym as a couple. You can even use that time to talk about your fitness goals, personal progress and celebrate the small victories enjoyed with each workout.
