PLANET FITNESS DONATES MORE THAN 10,000 SLICES OF PIZZA TO HEALTHCARE WORKERS NATIONWIDE IN HONOR OF FITNESS BRAND’S PIZZA MONDAY
Thanks to Every Person Who Participated in the “United We Move” Home Work-in via Facebook Live on Monday, May 4, Planet Fitness Supported Frontline Workers with $25,000 Worth of Pizza
HAMPTON, N.H. (May 26, 2020) – Planet Fitness, Inc., one of the largest and fastest-growing global franchisors and operators of fitness centers with more members than any other fitness brand, recently donated more than 10,000 pizza slices – valued at $25,000 – in honor of the fitness brand’s Pizza Monday, where members are traditionally treated to pizza on the first Monday of the month. On Monday, May 4, every participant who joined the online “Work-in” on Planet Fitness’ Facebook page helped donate a slice to essential workers on the front lines.
The donation effort is in partnership with Pizza vs. Pandemic, an organization formed by Slice Out Hunger, Slice and Pizza to the Polls, who are feeding frontline workers by coordinating pizza deliveries with independent pizzerias. To date, hundreds of pizzas have been donated to healthcare workers at more than 100 hospitals and health care facilities across 16 cities that are most in need during this difficult time. Fueled by our collective fitness efforts, these Pizza Monday pizza orders also provided much needed revenue to the small businesses serving our communities nationwide.
The free live “Home Work-Ins” are part of Planet Fitness’ “United We Move” campaign, designed to motivate and inspire us all to stay physically and mentally fit. Featuring Planet Fitness certified trainers and celebrity guests, each workout is streamed daily at 7 p.m. ET and are available both on Facebook and the Planet Fitness YouTube channel once the broadcast is over. Each virtual class is 20 minutes (or less) and doesn’t require any equipment.
“It’s an honor to do our part by providing meals to essential healthcare workers,” said McCall Gosselin, senior vice president of communications and corporate social responsibility at Planet Fitness. “We cannot thank them enough for their incredible commitment and bravery that is helping save so many lives. We’re proud to be able to serve them a small token of our appreciation.”
Unlike traditional gyms, Planet Fitness has always believed that fitness can be fun, realistic and judgement free. Planet Fitness’ pizza history dates back to 1999 when a day-long shortage of hot water in its Concord, N.H., club – the company’s third location – prompted its staff to order pizza for members in appreciation of their patience and understanding. The gesture was so well received and fostered such a strong sense of gathering and community that Planet Fitness implemented a monthly free pizza giveaway in all clubs shortly thereafter – and the tradition continues today more than 20 years later. “Pizza Monday” now takes place on the first Monday of every month with more than nine million slices annually.
