Planet Fitness Banks On Sports Science To Power Its March Madness Activation

Key Points

  • As the recovery wellness market floods with options, fitness brands face pressure to chase every trend rather than build a product strategy grounded in what members actually want.

  • Jamie Medeiros, Chief Brand Officer at Planet Fitness, shares how the brand's "Rebound & Recover" campaign brings its Black Card Spa recovery amenities to March Madness fans through a touring mobile spa and three carefully chosen athlete spokespeople.

  • Planet Fitness lets real member behavior drive which amenities make the cut, using cultural moments like March Madness to prove that premium wellness tools are for everyone, not just elite athletes.

Turns out watching March Madness counts as cardio. Research shows that fans' heart rates spike to levels comparable to physical exercise during intense games, and Planet Fitness is building an entire campaign around it. Rebound & Recover is the brand's March Madness activation, using that insight to position its Black Card Spa recovery amenities as the perfect antidote to game-day stress, delivering them to fans via a literal touring bus that pulls up to venues across the country.

Jamie Medeiros, Chief Brand Officer at Planet Fitness, has spent over two decades steering the brand's marketing through every phase of its growth. She sees the campaign as more than a seasonal activation. "Our journey has been bringing fitness to the masses and making it accessible. Now we're expanding that value proposition to include wellness and recovery. That's the evolution of Planet Fitness," says Medeiros.

The recovery wellness market is booming, with everyone from boutique studios to tech startups competing for the consumer who wants a Theragun, a cold plunge, and a HydroMassage® all before noon. Rather than follow the crowd, Planet Fitness takes a deliberate test-and-learn approach to determine which amenities are worth bringing to its members, a process that feeds directly into what ends up on the bus.

  • Spa on wheels: Now in its second year, the mobile Black Card Spa makes intentional stops at venues where fans are already gathered, giving consumers a hands-on trial of what the brand has been carefully curating in its clubs. The bus carries the full suite: massage chairs, HydroMassage®, and the CryoLounge+. "It really creates this amazing immersion for our brand, showcasing how recovery is part of your total wellness journey. It's about allowing fans and general consumers to try out the amazing offerings," says Medeiros.

  • Eyes on the prize: Not every amenity gaining buzz outside a gym will make the cut inside a Planet Fitness. The brand is currently piloting a range of options across club locations, letting actual member behavior determine what earns a permanent spot in the Black Card Spa. "We are definitely keeping our eyes on how recovery is evolving. We're testing a lot of different amenities in several of our club locations right now to understand what our members are after and what will best support them in their journey."

  • Boots on the ground: The feedback loop is not just digital. Beyond QR code surveys and email feedback, the team makes a point of being physically present in clubs to observe how members use the space. "A big part of our learning is to be present, see how members are utilizing what's in the Black Card Spa, and synthesize that information to understand what decisions we need to make next," she explains.

For the past two years, Planet Fitness has been deliberate about earning credibility and cultural relevance without sacrificing the accessibility that defines it, and "Rebound & Recover" puts that strategy in motion at the year's biggest basketball moment. The campaign is built around a hands-on touring activation and a carefully chosen trio of spokespeople selected to mirror the brand's wide membership range, from 18 to 80.

  • Awesome, baby!: Anchoring the campaign to one of basketball's most beloved voices gives it an authenticity that a younger or less iconic partner simply could not deliver. "Partnering with an icon like Dick Vitale, who is synonymous with basketball, was really important for us to be credible in the space," says Medeiros.

  • The next generation: UConn guard Azzi Fudd and Michigan guard Elliot Cadeau bring something different: proof that the fitness and recovery journey is universal. Fudd has been open about her path back from a series of knee injuries, and Cadeau's reputation is built on relentless effort and showing up every game. "They have amazing stories of being resilient in their journeys, overcoming adversity, and showing up as leaders. That's really important for us to showcase because not every fitness journey is going to look the same," says Medeiros.

The deeper idea running through all of it is democratization. Recovery has long carried an aspirational image: something elite athletes do in state-of-the-art facilities with teams of specialists. Planet Fitness is making the case that it does not have to work that way. "Everyone is working toward something, and their goal might be different. What a great athlete to be able to showcase that," concludes Medeiros.
